How to seal interior or exterior concrete with an impregnating sealer
This ‘how to’ guide explains how to seal & why to seal interior or exterior concrete with impregnating sealers.
Whilst impregnating sealers do NOT dustproof, they can have many advantages when sealing concretes.
Which product should I use to make concrete resist water & oil-based staining?
We recommend using 2 different types of impregnating sealer. This is primarily due to the location of the concrete i.e internal or external concrete.
Floorseal Premium Impregnating Sealer can be applied to concretes within 28 days of pouring & drying. Premium Impregnating Sealer is to be applied in 2 consecutive coats with approximately 1 hour of drying time between coats. It is solvent & VOc free & is water-based. Often used on interior floors or worktops.
This sealer is suitable for use on concretes which need to resist water and oil-based staining. Premium Impregnating Sealer can be applied to interior or exterior concrete. This can be on both floors or walls. This sealer is suitable for use in fully wet areas and is 100% breathable.
Floorseal Render & Masonry Sealer is a water-based sealer free from solvents & VOCs, easy to work with and rapid drying. It will penetrate the concrete creating a surface which is breathable but resists moisture, carbon deposits & oils. This concrete sealer is for sealing exterior concretes. Its primary use is on concrete walls but can be used on floors or other concrete structures.
What are the benefits of sealing an interior concrete with a Premium Impregnating Sealer?
Premium Impregnating Sealer is a type of sub-surface sealer, also known as a penetrating sealer. The benefit of using this kind of sealer is that it cannot be seen, therefore seals the surface without the possibility of a sheen or a surface film forming.
Premium Impregnating Sealer can be used in fully wet areas, dense surfaces & highly porous surfaces. Typically impregnating sealers are used when there is a requirement for the appearance of the surface to remain totally unaltered.
The advantages of this product are the fact it can be used in wet rooms, is not visible and will penetrate dense or highly porous surfaces.
This sealer is often used on interior floors & worktops.
What are the benefits of using Render & Masonry Sealer on exterior concrete walls?
Floorseal Render & Masonry Sealer is easy to apply and resists rainwater, carbon deposits, UV, and oils. It is fully breathable, and this makes it suitable for all porous exterior concretes, renders and general masonry.
Render & Masonry Sealer is not film-forming so cannot trap moisture. It is easy to apply via sprayer, roller, or brush.
This sealer will not alter the appearance of the surface it is applied to because it is a sub-surface sealer. Render & Masonry Sealer is available in economical 20-litre sized containers for treating larger areas.
Sub-surface sealers are beneficial on exterior surfaces as they avoid the possibility of trapped moisture. This could be trapped moisture, which would normally pass through the structure of the building or floor, and then evaporate. Or environmental moisture (such as rainwater) that may work its way around a surface film forming type of sealer.
Floorseal Render & Masonry Sealer will not trap moisture. It is a breathable sealer which does not create a film (or lacquer) on the surface. Render & Masonry Sealer seals from within and does not alter the colour or appearance of the concrete.
How do impregnating concrete sealers work?
Impregnating sealers are generally applied in the same way. Please check the detailed user instruction on the individual product page. Always apply in accordance with the associated Technical Data Sheet, these are located on the individual product pages. For quick reference please read the information below.
- Apply the product and allow it to soak into the surface.
- Allow approximately 20 – 30 minutes for the product to soak into the pores of the concrete.
- Blot off any remain excess (liquid which can still be seen on the surface).
- Remove the excess with microfibre cloths or a dry roller.
- Apply again (lightly) approximately 40 minutes later.
- Remove the excess as before.
The sealer will cure within the pores of the concrete forming a moisture-resistant barrier (not on the surface like a skin). It is for this reason the surface can breathe. Impregnating sealers never form a film or lacquer on the surface. Therefore, an impregnating sealer cannot produce a sheen or *alter colour.
In short, impregnating sealers are ‘in’ the concrete not ‘on’ the concrete.
*The only type of impregnating sealer which can alter colour is a colour-enhancing impregnating sealer. This type of impregnator does not noticeably alter the colour of concrete unless it is a coloured concrete. This type of sealer is beyond the scope of this article as they are rarely used on concrete.
In conclusion
Floorseal Premium Impregnating Sealer is typically used to seal interior concrete floors and walls where dust proofing is NOT required. The benefit of using an impregnator is that they cannot be seen, so are described as matt finish. In fact, they have no finish as they are ‘in’ the concrete not ‘on’ the concrete.
This product is great for sealing dense or highly porous surfaces and surfaces. Often where there is no desire to change sheen or colour. It can also be used for sealing fully wet areas where dust proofers cannot be applied.
This product is fully breathable. Can be applied to floors, walls and worktops – often used on internal surfaces.
Floorseal Render & Masonry Sealer should be used on exterior walls. It is very similar to Premium Impregnating Sealer. It is applied in the same way and will not alter the appearance of the concrete. This sealer can be applied to concrete, porous renders, and general porous masonry. It protects against rainwater, UV, organic growth, carbon deposits and oils.
This product is fully breathable. Often used on render, masonry and general concrete cladding.
Floorseal Render & Masonry Sealer is usually a more economical way of sealing exterior concretes, renders & masonry due to its lower price point.
Coverage Rates
Premium Impregnating Sealer will cover approximately 6m2 per litre during the 1st application and 12m2 per litre during the 2nd application. Please be aware that coverage rates always vary depending on the individual porosity of the surface being sealed. Dense surfaces may only require one application of product.
Render & Masonry Sealer will cover approximately 5m2 per litre. Please be aware that coverage rates always vary depending on the individual porosity of the surface being sealed. Dense surfaces may only require one application of product.
As a rough guide, 5 litres of the products above will cover approximately 25-30m2 of surface area. This is based on an average level of porosity on a horizontal or a vertical surface. Dense surfaces may only require one application of product.
