How to seal a natural stone patio

This article explains how to seal a natural stone patio with one of three products. All the products mentioned in this article are compatible with brush in compounds, sand & cement mortar or lime pointing.

The sealer you ultimately select will depend on the following factors:

  • Whether you wish to retain a totally unaltered appearance.
  • Do you wish to alter/colour enhance the surface?
  • The type, colour & porosity of stone.

If you wish to view the product pages of any of the sealers mentioned in this article, please click the product title highlighted in blue. There is other information at the foot of the page regarding user guides and other how to guides.

1. Sealing with Floorseal Natural Stone Sealer Breathe

This breathable impregnator can be applied to any porous natural stone, clay-based tile, concrete, or porous pointing material. It is water based, low odour, solvent/VOC free and dries rapidly. Apply twice, approximately 40 minutes – to one hour apart.

Apply to any new or older existing porous natural stone patio or paver.

Natural Stone Sealer Breathe is fully breathable, so suitable for any situation where moisture vapour transmission is required. Or equally, any application where you do not wish to alter the appearance of the surface. The sealer will resist water/oil-based staining & organic growth.

This product does not alter the appearance of natural stone, visually it will remain exactly as it was prior to sealing. For that reason, it must be described as natural/matt finish. This product could equally be described as ‘no finish’ as the sealing polymers become meshed into the pores of the stone, they do not form a film or surface coating.

Natural Stone Sealer Breathe is not a surface sealant, so will not create a sheen or change in appearance. Therefore, it is the most natural way to seal any natural stone, and as it is fully breathable, it is suitable for newly laid patios where moisture vapour transfer is still occurring.

The type of stone this sealer is suitable for is almost any form of sandstone, limestone, slate, brick, marble, clay tiles, Kandla Grey, granite & York stone.

We recommend application via a pump-up sprayer when working on exterior surfaces.

1 litre covers approximately 8m2, the 2nd consecutive application will cover approximately 16m2. A generic example of coverage is one 5L container will cover 20m2-25m2 (approx) of surface area, when applied in 2 consecutive coats.

Natural Stone Sealer Breathe can also be used as a pre-grout sealer. In this case the 2nd application can be made days/weeks after the 1st application.

Indian Sandstone Sealer & Colour Enhancer

2. Sealing with Indian Sandstone Sealer & Colour Intensifier

This colour enhancing impregnator can be applied to any porous natural stone, clay-based tile, or paver which displays natural colour when dry.

Indian Sandstone Sealer & Colour Intensifier is water-based, low odour, solvent/VOC free and dries rapidly. Apply twice, approximately 40 minutes to one hour apart.

This product is suited to sandstones which display natural colour when dry. The effect of saturation with water is not an indicator that a sealer will product the same result. You should test any sealer before application, in particular colour enhancers to check the final appearance.

Indian Sandstone Sealer & Colour Intensifier is similar to Natural Stone Sealer Breathe. It is a fully breathable matt finish sealer, but in addition to this, this product will slightly deepen the colour of the stone.

The effect is a little like slightly dampening with water, but without a sheen/visible film. It will enhance or intensify natural colour.

This product seals the stone but also preserves the stones natural matt appearance with subtle colour enhancement. The sealer does not form a film, sheen or shiny surface coating.

Therefore, this sealer is a natural way to seal any porous stone and enhance the natural colours and hues. It produces a subtle colour enhanced natural matt finish, fully breathable and therefore suitable for newly laid patios where moisture vapour transfer is still occurring.

The types of stone this sealer is best suited for are natural stone which can be colour enhanced, such as colourful Indian sandstones, colourful York sandstone & any sandstone which displays natural earthy colour (when dry). This product is not suitable for Kandla Grey sandstone and faded black limestone.

Apply Indian Sandstone Sealer & Colour Intensifier twice, approximately one hour apart removing any excess after each application. We recommend application via a pump-up sprayer.

1 litre covers approximately 8m2, the 2nd consecutive application will cover approximately 16m2. A generic example of coverage is one 5L container will cover 20m2-25m2 (approx) of surface area, when applied in 2 consecutive coats.

Indian Sandstone Sealer & colour Intensifier is not suitable for use as a pre-grout sealer.

Flagstone Sealer

3. Sealing with Sandstone Wet Look Sealer

Sandstone Wet Look Sealer can be applied to any porous natural stone, clay-based tile, or paver & associated porous pointing or jointing material.

Sandstone Wet Look Sealer is solvent-based & dries rapidly. This product is typically applied twice approximately one hour apart. This sealer resists water/oil-based staining & inhibits organic growth.

The product is suited to most sandstones which typically display natural colour or even more monotone sandstone such as Kandla Grey. You should always test any sealer before full application, in particular products which alter colour/appearance.

Sandstone Wet Look Sealer is significantly different to the other sealers noted in this article. It will deepen colour to a much greater degree than Indian Sandstone Sealer & Colour Intensifier and (unlike Indian Sandstone Sealer & Colour Intensifier & Natural Stone Sealer Breathe) it will create a silk finish, as it is a topical sealer.

Unlike some topical sealers Sandstone Wet Look Sealer strongly resists moisture clouding, abrasion, & degradation by UV light.

This sealer will deepen colour on colourful sandstones and also plain grey (monotone) sandstones.

Sandstone Wet Look Sealer is solvent-based, relatively low odour, rapid drying, produces a strong colour enhanced silk finish, semi breathable & suitable for most new or old patios.

The types of stone this sealer is best suited for is natural sandstone. Such as colourful Indian sandstones, York sandstone & plainer sandstone such as Kandla Grey sandstone. Almost any surface you wish to deepen the colour of.

Apply Sandstone Wet Look Sealer twice, approximately one hour apart. We recommend application via a pump-up sprayer.

12m2 per litre per coat. A generic example of coverage is one 5L container will cover 30m2 of surface area when applied in 2 consecutive coats.

Sandstone Wet Look Sealer is not suitable for use as a pre-grout sealer.
