Achieve a satin protective finish with this slate sealer

Slate Sealer creates a satin finish to exterior or interior tiles which also deepens colour. Slate sealer is easy to apply in two thin coats with a microfibre cloth or flat mop. This water-based low odour sealer easily seals porous natural slate flooring, patios, walls, tables and hearths. Suitable for use to seal and deepen the colour of natural slate leaving an attractive enhanced satin finish. Slate is a porous but quite a dense natural stone which appears most attractive when sealed with a product which can enhance surface colours. The sealer will resist water & oil-based staining and inhibits organic stains and growth. Apply to your slate in two consecutive thin coats to leaving an attractive enhanced finish. This sealer is a water-based solvent free sealer which dries rapidly and is low odour.

Deepen the colour of slate of natural porous slate

Slate Sealer will slightly deepen surface colours similar to dampening with a small amount of water. This slate sealer produces a satin finish when applied correctly in 2 thin coats. This water-based sealer is an opaque liquid which penetrates the surface of the slate creating an attractive finish. The sealer does not contain a pigment or dyes, it seals in a subtle understated way creating a colour enhanced sheen. Slate Sealer should be applied using a flat microfibre pad or cloth. The key to applying this product is to work in nice thin coats in dry conditions. If the sealer is applied with a sprayer, roller or brush we strongly recommend spreading the product out into thin coats using a flat microfibre mop or cloth. Do not allow the product to puddle, it must be evenly applied to the stone to produce the best finish. We have various cleaning products to pre-clean or maintain the surface of your slate. To pre-clean exterior slate floors which have been jointed with a brush in compound or resin based grout please use Floorseal Sealer Residue Remover. Use Floorseal Stone Floor Cleaner to pre-clean interior floors, followed by Floorseal Ph Neutral Floor Cleaner to maintain the sealed surface. Floorseal Cement & Grout Haze Remover can be used to remove cement based grouts on interior or exterior floors. Available in 1 litre & 5 litre containers with free standard delivery & express shipping options. Samples are available. Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I use Slate Sealer on both internal and external surfaces?

Slate Sealer can be applied to internal or external surfaces.

  • Can this product be used to seal slate patios or pavers?

Yes, it will deepen surface colour and create a satin sheen.

  • What is the coverage rate of this product?

Around 20m2 per litre. Please remember you will be applying 2 thin coats. As an idea we think you should be able to seal approximately 40m2 per 5 litre container. Please be aware some slates are more porous than others!

  • Is this product easy to use?

Yes, it is water based, low odour and dries quickly. Ideally apply with a flat microfibre mop or cloth making sure no pooling or puddling occurs. Apply a 2nd coat approximately 60-90 minutes later. You can apply with a sprayer, roller or brush but you must take care to spread the product out in thin coats. Do not allow pooling or puddling to occur.

  • I want a 'wet look' sealer, is this product suitable?

This product will deepen surface colours and leave a sheen. It does not produce a glossy finish or totally replicate the effect of wetting with water. Its purpose is to product a more natural subtle finish with a sheen. If your slate is in good condition and a darker grey/blue shade this product will deepen its colour. Test before use to gauge the finish you will achieve.

  • How does this sealer work?

It soaks into the surface with some product drying on the surface to produce a sheen. The sealer should be built-up in two thin coats. Distribute evenly with a flat microfibre mop, cloth or soft brush. You can apply more than 2 thin coats on interior surfaces. The best finish is produced by applying thin coats, do not allow the product to pool or puddle.

  • What can I clean my internal slate with before sealing?

You can clean your floor with Floorseal Stone Floor Cleaner to remove general dirt, grime, wax, and certain old water based sealers. You should use Floorseal Cement & Grout Haze Remover to remove cement-based grout hazes.

Always rinse the surface heavily with water after using any cleaner and allow it to totally dry before sealing.

  • Will this product replicate how slate looks when its wet?

It will capture most of that appearance, but be aware no sealer totally replicates the effect of wetting a natural stone with water. If the slate is in good condition it will deepen the colour of the tile leaving a low sheen finish.

  • Does the surface of slate need to be dry to apply this product?

Yes, only apply this product in dry weather with adequate curing time in dry weather. Do not apply the product if rain or frost is forecast. Do not apply to a damp floor after cleaning.

  • How many coats of this product do I need to apply?

Apply in 2 thin coats 60-90 minutes apart. Do not apply in thick coats, it does not necessarily mean the stone deepens in colour more or becomes super shiny! It usually leads to an overbuild of product and a sub-optimal finish.

When working indoors you may be able to add a 3rd thin coat.

  • What should I pre-clean my external slate pavers with before sealing?

We recommend pre-cleaning external slate tiles with Floorseal Sealer Residue Remover if you have used a brush in compound.

Sand and cement residues can be removed with Floorseal Cement & Grout Haze Remover.

  • We have slight rainbow staining from a resin based brush in compound, how do we remove it?

Use Floorseal Sealer Residue Remover to remove mild resin marks.

  • Can I use this product in wet rooms?

No, you cannot use this product in a wet room or shower cubicle. You would need to use an impregnating sealer, please contact us for details.
