How does Interior Brick Sealer & Dustproofer work?

Apply the brick sealer to any porous surface and allow the sealer to be absorbed. You will notice the sealer soaking into the pores of the brick or stone. A small amount of product will also dry on the surface thus binding the surface and preventing dust.

The product resists staining as well as preventing unwelcome dusting. Interior Brick Sealer & Dustproofer is both a sealer and a dustproofer.

Normally only one application of this product is required. When sealing particularly porous surfaces (or floors) you may wish to apply the sealer more than once. Sandblasted brick & masonry is extremely porous and may benefit from a 2nd coat. If you are sealing an old brick floor you can build the sealer up in multiple coats to resist abrasion or to create a satin finish.

What should I use to seal an interior brick wall with?

Interior Brick Sealer & Dustproofer is an easy & effective way of sealing internal brick walls. It is water-based, so low odour; this is an important consideration when applying a sealer in an interior space.

The sealer is non-flammable, therefore suitable for use adjacent to fireplaces or multi-fuel burning stoves. The product is water-based & low odour so suitable for general interior use and around multi-fuel burners & kitchen hobs.

Interior Brick Sealer & Dustproofer is easy to apply with a brush, sponge or microfibre cloth.

For large areas of brick/stone wall the sealer can be applied with a low-pressure sprayer, fitted with a coarse nozzle. When spraying, take care to remove runoff by quickly redistributing any excess sealer with a brush.

Any excess sealer can also be blotted from the surface with cloths or a dry roller. After spraying, some product may occasionally collect in heavily recessed pointing or on particularly rough/pitted surfaces.

Should I seal interior brick walls?

In domestic environments it is beneficial to seal any internal brick and masonry surface to prevent dusting & staining. It can also be possible to slightly enhance the colour of natural stone or soft red brickwork.

Dust sealing interior brick or stone can prevent the unwanted trickledown effect of red dust onto pale carpets, wood, stone or tiled surfaces.

Sealing surfaces, to prevent airborne dust is important in commercial environments. It prevents dust from travelling through air conditioning systems contaminating electrical systems and the working environment.

Soft historic brickwork typically sheds dust when a building dries (during or after renovation). This may occur slowly as the ambient temperature within the building increases after renovation. Dustproofing these soft friable surfaces stabilises the surface thus preventing airborne dust particles.

Does Floorseal Interior Brick Sealer & Dustproofer produce a finish?

Interior Brick Sealer & Dustproofer dries to a matt appearance when applied in one coat. This products purpose is primarily to seal dust with a natural finish.

It may also slightly deepen surface colours (particularly red soft brick), enhancing natural earthy tones.

We recommend testing the sealer on a small area first, this will help to make a final check for suitability. Apply to a small inconspicuous area and allow the sealer to dry.

One coat of sealer will produce a natural matt finish. In most situations the appearance of the brickwork will remain unaltered. If you wish to change/enhance the appearance of the surface you can then proceed to building the product up in further coats. This may be to seal particularly porous surfaces, such as sandblasted brick/stone, or perhaps to seal a floor.

When sealing floors we recommend applying a minimum of 2-3 coats.

Is it possible to create a sheen instead of a matt finish?

If Interior Brick Sealer & Dustproofer is applied in multiple coats, a very subtle satin sheen can be seen. Applying the product with a sprayer/roller worked in with a brush or a microfibre cloth ensures nice even rapid drying coats of sealer.

What kind of surface & pointing is this product compatible with?

Interior Brick Sealer & Dustproofer is compatible with any kind of porous interior brick wall. It is also suitable for use on sandstone, limestone, slate, basalt, blue lias, concrete, granite, basalt, shales, flints, breeze blocks, Portland cement pointing, lime pointing & lime & modern gypsum plastered walls.

We do not recommend using this product in a full wet area i.e. shower cubicles. This product can be used in kitchens, general bathrooms, bedrooms, living area, commercial situations & can be over painted.

What is the coverage rate of Interior Brick Sealer & Dustproofer?

The general coverage rate is approximately 8m2 per litre when applied in a single application. You may achieve a greater coverage rate on dense bricks or dense masonry. The coverage rate usually increases when applying additional coats (if required).

Coverage on sandblasted or particularly soft surfaces

Please note on highly porous surfaces like sandblasted brick, breeze block, or highly porous stone the surface will require more sealer than on a less porous surface. A sandblasted Victorian brick may require 1 litre to every 4m2 of surface area. Ultimately you should adapt the coverage rate based on the porosity of the surface encountered.

Should I pre-clean the brick before sealing?

We recommend pre-cleaning all surfaces (as a minimum) by dry brushing and dry vacuuming prior to sealing. Sandblasted surfaces will certainly require vacuuming before any sealing work is carried out. Generally this is all that is required before sealing.

For the removal of pointing staining from lime or sand & cement Portland cement you should clean with Floorseal Cement & Grout Haze Remover. This product will also remove some general dirt & lime plasters. Paint splashes and modern ‘pink’ plaster will require soaking & some light abrasion. Light soot is possible to remove, heavy soot/carbon deposits will probably require a blasting technique. The surface should be allowed to fully dry before any sealing takes place. Test the product on the surface to ensure suitability. Some surfaces (such as limestone) may have to be cleaned via an alternative method.
