What kind of sealer is Floorseal Indian Sandstone Sealer & Colour Intensifier?

Floorseal Indian Sandstone Sealer & Colour Intensifier is a sub-surface impregnating sealer, the active content is held in suspension within the liquid carrying agent. Once applied this colour enhancing sealer is absorbed into the sandstone to repel moisture & general staining. The sealer also enhances the naturally occurring colours contained within the sandstone. This type of breathable sealer does not form a film, it is absorbed into the surface of the stone. Apply the product twice, the 2nd application should be made within approximately 40 minutes of the 1st.

What does this product do?

The benefit of the application of this sealer is the prevention of moisture penetration, thus helping the stone to resist general staining, frost damage & organic growth. The sealer enhances colour in a subtle, natural way. Indian Sandstone Sealer & Colour Intensifier does not create a sheen or shine, the product leaves a matt natural finish.

What does the term ‘non-film forming’ mean?

Non-film forming means that once applied, the sealer becomes meshed into the pores of the treated stone. This non-film forming sealer repels moisture from within. There is no visible coating/lacquer/film.

What kind of finish does Indian Sandstone Sealer & Colour Intensifier create?

Indian Sandstone Sealer & Colour Intensifier does not form a film. For this reason we describe the product as natural/matt finish. The product also slightly deepens the colour of a sandstone (which displays earthy colours/tones/shades when dry). Your sandstone will still retain a natural matt finish, but now with an enhanced deeper colour.

My sandstone is a plain sandstone like Kandla Grey – can I apply this sealer?

We do not recommend applying Indian Sandstone Sealer & Colour Intensifier to Kandla grey sandstone, or very plain monotone sandstones. These kinds of sandstone do not display any natural colour. You may prefer to seal with a non-visible sealer like Floorseal Natural Stone Sealer Breathe. Do not confuse wetting sandstone with water with the stone being naturally colourful. For a stone to be colour enhanced it should display some natural earthy colours, when it is dry for the process to be successful.

Preparing the sandstone before sealing

Never apply the sealer to damp stone, the surface should be totally dry. Ensure the surface is clean before application. Try to avoid applying the product when temperatures are below 10°C & above 20°C. There is some ‘wiggle room’ in the temperatures ranges noted. If you are sealing on a very warm day, then do so early in the morning, when the surface is still quite cool.

For older surfaces we recommend pre-cleaning with Floorseal Black Spot Remover Plus. This will remove general dirt and organic growth. For cement/mortar smear removal we recommend Floorseal Cement & Grout Haze Remover.

Applying Indian Sandstone Sealer & Colour Intensifier

You can apply this sealer via sprayer, roller or brush. For anything other than a very small area we recommend application using a low pressure pump-up sprayer (fitted with a coarse nozzle).

Spray onto the surface and allow the liquid to soak in. The greater the amount of sealer which is absorbed by the sandstone the more affectively it will be sealed. Try to encourage as much sealer into the stone as possible (by allowing it to saturate and therefore work its way into the pores).

The first liberal application of product is important as the sandstone will be at its most porous. The 2nd application is a ‘top up’ to fill any remaining pores which may accept a little more of the sealer. It is still important to apply the product twice, but you will find less product is required during the 2nd application.

After each application remove any excess i.e. any sealer which has not been absorbed into the stone. You can remove this with a dry roller or cloth. There is usually not much (excess) sealer visible but there may be some isolated areas on undulating riven stone. Remove the excess with 20-30 mins – perhaps sooner on a warm day.

What is the coverage rate of this sealer?

It depends on the porosity of the sandstone but as a guide 5 litres of product covers approximately 20m² of surface area. This is accounting for applying the product twice.

The more product you can encourage into the surface of the stone, the efficiently it will be sealed. If your stone will accept 5 litres of product over (for example) 15m² it is worth applying this much product into the area. Coverage rates are always indicative, they are not fixed, ultimately the type and porosity of the stone will dictate the final coverage rate.

Top tips

  • Pre-clean older surfaces with Floorseal Back Spot Remover Plus to remove lichen/algae/dirt/general organic growth.
  • Use Floorseal Cement & Grout Haze Remover to remove cement/grout/concrete.
  • Only apply to dry stone when rain is not imminent.
  • Do not apply in very hot or cold damp conditions.
  • Spray on and allow to be absorbed & remove the excess.
  • Apply the 2nd coat within approximately 40 mins of the 1st.
  • After use, wash out your sprayer with warm soapy water.
  • If you use a roller or brush they may have been waterproofed!
  • Not suitable for plain grey sandstone such as Kandla Grey.
  • Maintain the surface with Floorseal Green Remover Concentrate.
  • We do not recommend using this product as a pre-grout sealer.
  • After grouting please ensure the stone is free from grout residue before sealing.
  • If brush in compounds have been used you may wish to wash over the surface with a weak solution of Floorseal Sealer Residue Remover. As a minimum ensure no compound staining is visible and no ‘rainbowing’ is occurring.
  • Rainbowing is usually visible either side of the joint (when the stone is saturated with water) if jointing compound oils and residues are still present.
